Join us for a day of stitching and stuffing plush airplanes!
Keri Martin, GQCCC member and our Northern California Quilt Council representative, is organizing this event to make airplanes for the Girls in Aviation Day in September 2024 at Buchanan Field in Concord. It is a day for girls ages 7-18 to experience aviation and learn about non-traditional careers. Various aviation organizations sponsor hands-on activities for the girls. One activity will be for girls to close the open seam on a plush airplane using a baseball stitch according to FAA guidelines for repairing a tear in a dope and fabric aircraft. At past Girls in Aviation events, this activity has been a great success!
Keri needs 120 plush airplanes. A lofty goal! At the sew-in, she will pre-cut felt kits. She will also provide patterns for participants to pin to their own fabric, if desired, making it easier to cut multiple layers of fabric for several airplanes at a time. Your help is needed to cut airplane bodies, stitch, assemble, and stuff the aircraft. With many hands, the time will fly by!
There are three patterns available. The larger one is a pattern by MasterPlush and is easier to sew. A smaller pattern from Happy Cupcake Creations can also be made. Keri has adapted the pattern and instructions for her own version. The third pattern is from the Gluesticks blog and is small and simple. If you have a different pattern, or wish to create your own, give it a go - different airplane models are welcome!
Registration is open to members and non-members. When you register, you can indicate the number of guests you plan to bring. Once your registration is confirmed, you will be provided download links to the two patterns with instructions.
Please bring the following materials to the sew-in:
If you are unable to attend the sew-in, but wish to make some airplanes on your own, please reply to this email and we can send you the patterns. Also reply to this email if you have any questions.
Hope to see you there!
